St Nicholas' Sunday Club

There has always been a children's group that meet at Church during the main Communion service on every Sunday except the third Sunday when it is Church Parade and the uniformed organisations (Brownies, Guides, Scouts) are invited and encouraged to attend the service.
Formerly known as Sunday School, the name was changed some years ago at the request of the young people who attended and is now known as St. Nicholas Sunday Club.

It is a very friendly meeting of young people between the ages of 3 and 13 years, which is led by Jenny and Barbara who are both members of the congregation and DBS checked.

Sunday Club is intended to involve young people in active worship and help them understand the meanings of the Bible and Church life.....and all in a fun and informal atmosphere!

We leave the service after the first hymn ( and go into the adjoining Church centre), having received a prayer and a blessing from the Vicar, and then we re-join the service just before the Lord's Prayer is said and the giving of bread and wine ( Holy Communion).

During our time in the centre, we say a prayer (written by Sunday Club themselves) and catch up on everyone's news.

We then do activities and crafts based on the stories in the Bible.

On our return to the main service, and after Communion, the young people are always keen to share their learnings with the congregation during the notices.

We have a section of the large noticeboard at the back of the Church where we display our work for all to see!

In addition to the usual activities, we also design and make posters to be displayed in the noticeboard in the Church garden, for special occasions such as Mothering Sunday and Harvest Festival.

Each Christmas we devise, rehearse and perform a version of the Nativity.

We perform during the Church Parade in December and then do a second performance on Christmas Eve during the Crib Service. Each year we manage to come up with a different angle and this has included ..

  • Presenting a huge Advent calendar with the Christmas story behind each of the windows,
  • Telling the story whilst decorating a Christmas tree with hand drawn laminated figures,
  • Singing the whole of the story,
  • Acting out the story with a narrator...to name just a few versions!

At Harvest and Advent all the Church windowsills are decorated and Sunday Club have their own designated sill near the noticeboard...please see attached photos.

For Harvest we decorate with donated food, in the past we have put googly eyes on fruits and vegetables! but mostly we use non-perishable food so that we can then forward it to those less fortunate than ourselves.

At Christmas time we decorate the same window and have previously made angels and stars. Last year we made a 3D silhouette of the Little Town of Bethlehem, complete with night lights and snow!

You could learn about how many loaves of bread and how many fishes Jesus had to divide amongst the people!

You could learn how we change water into 'wine'!!!

And even find out why there are different symbols connected to the Bible on the front of Jelly Babies!!! It's true....check them out! The 'B' on the pink one represents Baby Jesus!

We look forward to welcoming you to our very friendly and inclusive Sunday Club at some point in the not-too-distant future.
